The Great Minds Of The Enlightenment Era - 1042 Words
Atifete Jahjaga, the fourth President of Kosovo states, ââ¬Å"When there is information, there is enlightenment. When there is debate, there are solutions. When there is no sharing of power, no rule of law, no accountability, there is abuse, corruption, subjugation and indignation.â⬠At the beginning of the Enlightenment the free market of ideas was open, opinions were appreciated, but most of all, the basic human rights of all people were safe. That all changed at the beginning of the French Revolution. During this time, many people abused their government s power, and often contradicted their own beliefs. In the Cahier de doleances, the third estate ââ¬Å"[asked] that the number of religious holidays be reducedâ⬠because it could cause ââ¬Å"considerable detriment to the stateâ⬠also with ââ¬Å"disadvantages of idlenessâ⬠(Doc. 11). Many felt that the minimizing of religious holidays would provide a more accurate representation of a year while also helping to focus citizens on earthly seasons rather than liturgical. The Committee used these outdated statements to justify creating a calendar that is only being created to make their citizens work more. One concerned citizen, Abbe Sieyes, responded to the proposition of the calendar by stating ââ¬Å"[Franceââ¬â¢s] customary practices, the many connections [they] have with the practices of peoples in neighboring countries, and the centuries immediately preceding [their] own, all combine, in this respect, to make an obstacle too imposing to overcomeâ⬠(Doc. 13). Those opposed to the Calendar felt that it would complicate relations with other countries, while also disrespecting what the church has taught. The Committee of Public safety abandoned the values of the Enlightenment era and completely tarnished the Revolutionââ¬â¢s purpose. The National Assembly gave every ounce of power they had and devoted it to

As described earlier there has been the shift within the Japanese customer preferences along with this has been even much more highlighted because of the global financial crisis. Rather, days of charging the higher price for products having proprietary logo looked to be gone within the Japan. In the time of recession Japanese customers have been becoming much more aware about value of money. However, counterfeiting seemed even in Japanese market in which quality has been one of important factors within act of buying the luxury goods along with this became the bigger challenge for LV. Now that fake bags have been hard to differentiate from genuine ones, Japanese customer authentic, which they would save for important occasions. As there had been sustained slowdown in demand for luxury goods in the year 2008 to 2009 because of the global recession, Japanese luxury market would remain the healthy as well as increasing industry along with strategic decisions may overcome those challenges. The Poverty Paradox for Philippines Case Study- myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theThe Poverty Paradox for Philippines Case Study. Answer: Introduction In the modern world that we are living today, poverty is one of the subjects that have been given much attention by both scholars and researchers. This fact maybe because it has caused tremendous effects around the globe, not only from developing countries but also some areas in the developed countries. Poverty is about not having enough money for basic needs such as food clothing and shelter. Poverty has various definitions according to different schools of thought. However, the baseline is the same; that poverty has distinguishing characteristics like lack of basic needs hence inability to acquire or even think of secondary needs such as recreation. Research shows that over 3 billion people in the world live on a daily expenditure of less than $2.5. The research further shows that more than 50% of the world's population is living in abject poverty. As a result, it, therefore, becomes imperative to explore the topic. This research essay is aimed at looking at the paradox of poverty in the Philippines. Overview of Philippines Philippine is a tropical country located in the Pacific Ocean. It has 7,107 islands, and it lies in the western Pacific Ocean. It borders Taiwan to the north and Vietnam to the west. By surface area, Philippine is believed to be the 73rd largest country in the world having a population of 78 million people. It is the 7th populous country in Asia and the 13th most populous in the world. Manila is its capital city, and it hosts most of its educational and political institutions. Its economy has gotten stronger in the recent years and has remained dynamic(Datt, 2016). The percentage of people living in abject poverty in the country is currently 33% of the total population and 75% in some parts in the southern Philippines. What are the main causes of poverty in Philippines? Philippine, like any other countries, has the reasons as to why most of its population is living below the poverty line in spite of the fact that it is the leading producer of coconuts in the world. One of these causes is underutilization of natural resources(Agbola, 2017). Philippine is endowed with natural resources such as copper, gold, and zinc. In fact, its mineral deposits are the largest in the world. However, steps to utilize these natural resources have not been taken seriously. It is believed that the value of its mineral deposits is more than USD 849 billion(Mina, 2017). If steps were taken to exploit these natural resources, then the Philippines would be one of the richest countries, the reason being it will be able to provide enough food for its residents and more importantly enough job opportunities. Another major cause of poverty is political instability. Since President Ridrigon Duterte took office, Philippine has faced a never-ending line of political instability. Political instability leads to low productivity in the domestic industries and this lead to a decline the country's Gross Domestic Product and therefore per capita income(Mendoza, 2016). Political instability also scares away foreign investors who would have come to invest in the country and contribute to increased job opportunities hence reducing poverty. Does economic and population growth increase poverty? Another major cause of poverty in Philippine is a low pace of economic growth. Over the past 40 years, the country has experienced slow economic growth, and this has increased the poverty level. Another cause has been lack of poverty reduction strategies. Usually, when a country realizes that it is experiencing high poverty level, it lays out strategies towards the reduction of the poverty level(Rola, 2017). However, Philippine's government has been slow in taking corrective measures. Another main cause has been a weakness in the creation of employment as well as the quality of the jobs created. The Philippine government and citizens have not been able to come up good strategies that can provide quality jobs in the attempt to reduce the poverty level. One and the major cause of poverty in Philippine is increased and uncontrolled population growth. Over the recent past, the population of Philippine has been growing rapidly and uncontrollably. This growth has resulted to pressure in the consumption of the available resources and increased dependency ratio(Albert, 2014). The resultant effect of the same is poverty. Another cause is chronic exposure to risks such as natural disasters. Philippine has quite some active volcanoes that recurrently erupt. This disaster has caused uncertainty where people are not willing to invest in a particular place in fear of these disasters hence poverty. How has poverty affected Philippines? The poverty menace has resulted in some effects. One of these effects is malnutrition. The National Statistical Coordination board says that more than 11 million Filipinos are food poor and living below the subsistence level. Due to poverty, most of the people have not been able to get good enough and thus they have become malnourished. Research shows that due to food insecurity most of the preschool children are underweight and malnourished. Another effect is poor economic growth(Rosellon, 2016). Since most of the people are poor, they have nothing to invest in education, new crops, entrepreneurial activities or even skills. Moreover, they have little or no knowledge of market opportunities hence poor economic growth. Is increased child labor and theft as a result of poverty? Another effect is child labor. Statistics show that 3.6 million Filipino children between 5-17 years are child laborers. When parents lack enough money to educate them, they are left with no other option rather than going to streets to look for money for their upkeep and basic needs(Antoni, 2017). These children can be found laboring under the hot sun or even behind machines in small companies. Another effect is poor living conditions. That results from overcrowding and congestion due to increased population growth. Another major impact is crime and theft. Many people in the Philippines cant get enough money for their sustenance. As a result, they decide to do whatever it takes to provide for their families, and this includes stealing and robbery with violence. Research has proven that the major causes of theft and crime in Philippine are poverty. How about poverty and emerging issues? Poverty has also caused global warming and climate change(Sasaki, 2017). It has led to clear-cutting down of trees, something that has brought about desertification. Lack of trees causes global warming in the sense that there are no trees to absorb waste gases such as co2 released to the environment. Cutting down of trees also leads to lack of rain and therefore climate change. Solutions and conclusion The answer to the menace of poverty in Philippine is strategic planning. A board that will lay out poverty reduction strategies must be formed to tackle the matter. In providing solutions, the primary causes of poverty must be established from where strategies for closing the loopholes will be implemented. Poverty reduction is one of the sustainability goals, and it should be therefore dealt with urgently. Conclusively, the answer to the problem lies in the problem. Countering the causes of poverty will lead to better living in the Philippines. References Agbola, F., 2017. Does microfinance reduce poverty? Nationalism and patriotism Essay Example For Students
Nationalism and patriotism Essay Charles De Gaulle said Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first. Patriotism simply means love of country, it comes from the Greek and Latin words meaning father. It includes admiration and even love for the fatherland, and for the customs and traditions of the country. It implies a feeling of oneness and membership in the nation. It also means attachment to the land and the people, as well as devotion to the welfare of the community. A citizen is shaped by the beliefs, customs, and institutions of his native land. If reared in another country, he would develop into a much different person. Most men and women identify themselves with the country of their birth. They have the sense of belonging to that country and supporting its principles and institutions. At the same time, immigrants from other lands frequently learn to feel patriotism or appreciation for their adopted country far beyond that of the average citizen who has always lived in that country. This love of ones adopted country is especially true of persons who have fled from the restrictions and controls of a dictatorship to a free or democratic country. These citizens are often willing to make unusual sacrifices for their new homeland. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of patriotism is the people who gave their lives to free us from the British during the Revolutionary War. They fought and some of them even died so you and I can have the freedom to pretty much as please in everyday life. The next thing comes to mind when I think of patriotism is the people who fought and gave their lives during World War II. They fought for the same rights as our founding fathers did. That is to keep our country safe from foreign suppressers who want to corrupt our way of living, and from having one person having to much control over such a vast area of our little planet. Mainly, I have the utmost respect to the people who have done there part to keep our country as patriotic as it is now here in the late 20th century as it was thing back during the mid 18th century. I have to agree with the quote from Charles De Gaulle because those people fought for what they love most there country. I tip my hat off to those people and I salute them from within. Albert Einstein once said Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind. However nationalism is the belief that ones own country is the best country, or that ones own national group is the best nationality in the world. At its best, nationalism the best nationality in the world. At its best, nationalism may be a healthy pride in ones country or national group, but if it is carried too far, it may cause one nation to try to dominate other nations. The feeling of nationalism was not common in ancient times. A man usually owed allegiance to a political unit like the Greek city-state that was smaller than his national group or to one like the Roman Empire that was larger. During the Middle Ages, mans chief loyalty was to his church or social class rather than to his nation, but nationalism began to replace old loyalties as trade and better means of communication brought men closer together, and as the influence of the church declined. The French Revolution of 1789 strengthened nationalism by uniting the masses of the people in the common cause of winning freedom at home and defending their nation against foreign enemies. .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 , .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .postImageUrl , .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 , .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:hover , .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:visited , .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:active { border:0!important; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:active , .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9 .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udd259ad976119ec3cff034719abd4fb9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Learning English Essay As a result of growing nationalism, strong leaders in Germany, Italy, and other nations were able to mold their people into independent, unified countries. However, after World War II, nationalism played a large part in independence movements in Africa and Asia. Many former colonies became independent nations. Some authorities believe that nationalism .

There are many advantages and disadvantages to using primary sources as a means of accurately recounting historical events. The primary sources that provide the best means, however, of understanding the facts of an event are newspaper articles and photographs. There are a few advantages to having primar y sources when it comes to understanding the impact of a historical event. One of these advantages comes from personal accounts of the event. For example, in anticipation of the fifty year anniversary of the fire, Leon Stein began interviewing women who had survived the fire and after one interview notes: ââ¬Å"Mrs. Dworetz learned in this interview for the first time that there was a fire escapeâ⬠(Leon Stein Interviews). He also interviewed another woman who stated in her interview that, ââ¬Å"The Washington and Greene St. doors were always closedâ⬠(Leon Stein Interviews). From some of these testimonials, one can imagine the panic the women must have felt to be essentially trapped in a burning building. Without these interviews, it would be difficult for someone to imagine what went on inside the buildings. Another advantage of primary sources comes from the photographs taken during the fire and of the aftermath. There were several photographs taken of the factory aft er the fire and it is clear that the path for the women and other workers was blocked (ILR School Kheel Center). Also, photographs add a very human element to historical tragedies, as some of the photographs taken are of women who had jumped from the buildings in hopes of avoiding being burnt (ILR School Kheel Center). Newspaper articles should be the best source of primary information. For example, upon reading the articles printed the day of the fire, one can get a very clear picture of and the chaos that surrounded the events. The articles also point out flaws in the fire department equipment and the factory construction that lead to many more deaths (ILR School Kheel Center). While there are advantages to primary sources, it should be noted that there are also disadvantages to using them solely to understand historical events. While Stein interviewed survivors, he did so fifty years after the event had taken place. It is possible that, due to the event being so tragic, the survi vors did remember exactly what had taken place, but it cannot be fully trusted as an accurate account of the event.Advertising Looking for essay on history? Photographs can often also provide one with misinformation. They only capture a particular moment in time. As for newspaper articles, a reporter could potentially exaggerate the extremity of a situation in order for more people to buy and read the newspaper. Reporters can also sway the public to believe one thing or another to further perhaps a political or social cause. Judging from the advantages and disadvantages, it is clear that newspaper articles and photographs are the best primary sources to use in understanding historical events. In the case of the Triangle Waist Factory fire, these sources provide accounts for what happened imm ediately during and after the fire. The newspaper articles give immediate witness and survivor testimony showing the public the flaws in the factory and the fire department. Because of these immediate types of accounts, reforms were able to take place to make safer working conditions as well as better prepare the fire departments to deal with multi-story buildings. Although it took a tragedy to bring about these changes, future workers would benefit from the senseless deaths of so many young women, men, and children. ILR School Kheel Center. A College Essay Coachs Take on the College Admissions Scandal
A College Essay Coachs Take on the College Admissions Scandal The college admissions scandal that has been all over the news has inspired me to break my recent blogging silence. The greed and lack of integrity exhibited by employees of top universities disturb me greatly. Since I am a Yale graduate, I have received a couple of apologetic letters from President Salovey; I hope that the schoolââ¬â¢s promise to be more vigilant in its admissions process holds true. Since I am a college admissions essay coach, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by the media. Both USA Today and Rob Hart of WBBM talked to me about ethics in college admissions. Here are the article and radio clip for your reading and listening pleasure: USA Today:à Do all students cheat on their college applications? No, consultants say, but there are plenty of problems. I get calls from people who want me to write essays for them, and I wonââ¬â¢t do that, said Brenda Bernstein, who runs The Essay Expert. This student is being judged on their own ability. But there are services that do that. And some sell academic essays as well. WBBM Newsradio Show: Essay Coach Talks Best Practices For College Applications The Dual Life of a Resume Writer and College Essay Coach What strikes me, in particular, is that many people conflate the ethics of writing a professionalââ¬â¢s resume with the ethics of writing a studentââ¬â¢s college essay. I keep explaining to reporters and others why they are not the same. One of my resume writer colleagues posted this comment about the college admissions scandal to my Facebook page: Just to be devils advocate here, I dont see the difference between writing essays with information students have given about THEIR story and writing a resume for someone who tells you his / her story about his / her career. We dont put on the bottom of their resumes that it was written by us. Most executives have their executive assistants write their letters for them. Is that cheating by the executive (we have all seen where an executive calls his assistant into the office to take a memo)? Like I said, just playing devils advocate.à :-) My response: There is no assumption or requirement that resumes be written by the job applicant. In fact, many hiring managers say they *prefer* a professionally written resume. Theres also no rule that a student cant get some coaching and editing help on their essay. English teachers and guidance counselors have been doing this for years. Whats important to me is that the essay is truthful, at the level the student is capable of writing, and in the students voice. What I would add to the above is that there is most definitely a rule that students must write their own application essays. Admissions committees judge them for the quality of their writing and how they express themselves, because they are going to be required to use those skills in their college careers. By contrast, an executive wont be expected to write a good resume as part of his or her job. Moving Toward Truth Integrity My job as a college essay coach is to help a student tell the truth ââ¬â not the version of the truth they think an admissions committee wants to hear. I canââ¬â¢t tell you how many times Iââ¬â¢ve asked an applicant, ââ¬Å"Is that really true?â⬠and gotten the response, ââ¬Å"Well not completely. But it seems like thatââ¬â¢s what I should have gotten out of it.â⬠Again and again, I point the writer to the truth, which is always more interesting than the picture perfect story they thought they should tell. As a resume writer, too, my job is to tell the truth. The facts speak louder than any flowery language we could write to make something sound better than it is. We stick with the facts. The cheating uncovered in the recent college admissions scandal goes far beyond helping students think through the best way to tell their story. It goes way past the level of supporting an executive by presenting her accomplishments powerfully in writing. I hope the world recognizes this difference. More important, I fervently wish that parents, college admissions advisors, university administrators and sports coaches choose to act with integrity as they shepherd young adults into what could be the most important four years of their lives.
